The Israeli Haaretz newspaper reported Monday that the Yediot Ahronot newspaper refrained from publishing a report disclosing the execution of an Arab prisoner carried out by Israeli soldiers during the 1948 war despite it already announced its intention to do so.

The whole report was supposed to be published last Friday in the newspaper"s supplement. Yediot Ahronot had also announced last Thursday its intention to publish an illustrated report showing an Arab captive handcuffed and maltreated by Israeli gunmen.

The newspaper talked about a series of photos kept by a former Israeli senior officer who died recently including photos showing an Arab captive blindfolded and dumped dead in a pool of blood, but on Friday it published a clarification saying that in the wake of information received, the report would be suspended.

For its part, Haaretz stated that one of the reasons that prompted Yediot Ahronot not to publish the illustrated report was the warning it received from Israeli security officials that the publication of such report would lead to serious repercussions in the Middle East.
