The Middle East Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and the United States Institute of Peace sponsored a presentation by Grand Mufti of Egypt Ali Gomaa titled “The Challenge of Moderation in Islam: Egypt’s Religious Institution Versus Extremism.”

The talk focused on the problem of violent interpretations of Islam and what clerics like Gomaa are doing to combat them. He said Egypt must pursue democracy, but only in accordance with its own agenda.
