 A new report by the Ministry of Economical Development revealed that the recent global financial crisis grossly affected the Egyptians as 100,000 employees lost their jobs from the periods October 2008 to March 2009.  Unemployment rates increased by 9.37% in the third quarter of 2009.

 

The Ministry of Manpower and Immigration disclosed in a statement that the decline in job opportunities between January 2009 and August 2009 reached 32, 0219 as opposed to 20, 8610 job opportunities during the same period of the year before.

 

According to the reports by Human Rights centers such as “The Land Centre” and “Sons of the Earth” and “the Egyptian for Social and Economic Rights”, the year 2009 witnessed an acceleration of strikes reaching approximately 1200 strikes and protests took place by labour sectors in both the public and private enterprise sectors.

 

The protests were calling for the increase of wages, staying at work, incentives, allowances and other demands.
