Joint Statement from Al-Wafd and FJP Presidents Confirms Ongoing Alliance

President of Al-Wafd Party Dr. Sayed Al Badawy and President of Freedom and Justice Party Dr. Mohamed Morsi reiterate that the Democratic Alliance for Egypt which comprises above 40 parties was not solely founded for the sake of electoral coalitions, but rather for agreement on a set of principles that would be agreed upon by diverse political parties in the upcoming Parliament to serve the higher interests of Egypt and not just to win seats in the Parliament. Therefore, the Alliance between the FJP and Al-Wafd is still ongoing for the sake of building the modern constitutional and democratic Egypt for all citizens and achieving social justice and overall development in light of the documents endorsed by all parties in the Alliance, including the document proposed by the Alliance and Al-Azhar document that combined all previous proposals and was signed by the Democratic Alliance.

Throughout the past several weeks, the Alliance discussed mechanisms for coordination in the next elections that are expected to witness many difficulties. We, the party presidents of Al-Wafd and FJP, emphasize that all parties in the coalition agree on the importance of the continuation of the Alliance's role as a political coalition before, during, and after the elections; and there are several alternatives and suggestions made to overcome the large number of candidates from the coalition, one of which is to have more than one list representing the Democratic Alliance.

We assert that Saturday's meeting between the chief of staff Sami Annan and party leaders concerning the demands filed on the previous Wednesday by the Alliance has led to fulfilling the most important demand, which is cancelling the 5th article in the election law that had banned members of political parties from running for individual seats, while a clear vow was made to consider the rest of the other pressing demands. This necessitates our participation in the Parliamentary elections with mutual coordination in order to win the majority of the seats in both the People's Assembly and the Shurah Council.
