Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood, criticized the Egyptian initiative for a supposed truce for peace between Hamas and the Zionist enemy, describing it as "an initiative of shame", before another session Tuesday in his trial in a fabricated case where he is falsely accused of torturing two policemen in the Rabaa Square protest camp.

Before the trial – which was postponed to August – Dr. Beltagy said: "This irrational initiative smells of failure and shame. It certainly does not in any way reflect Egypt nor the Egyptian people who stand firmly by the Palestinian people".

He hailed the steadfastness of the Palestinians and Hamas in the face of the heavily-equipped Zionist army, saying: "The Palestinian people are reclaiming their dignity and their revolution. Islamic resistance will achieve victory for the Palestinian people".

Dr. Beltagy is one of the most prominent Egyptian political leaders who led relief convoys to support the Gaza Strip, even under the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, and was a member of the International Committee to Break the Siege of Gaza.

Earlier on July 14, Egypt launched an initiative for a cease-fire in Gaza that calls for the cessation of hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians, the opening of border crossings, and facilitating the movement of people and goods through border crossings in light of the stability of the security situation on the ground.

While several regional and international parties welcomed the Egyptian peace initiative, Hamas announced it would not accept any cease-fire agreement that "does not fulfill Palestinian conditions".
