Talaat Fahmi, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman, said the group "does not recognize, or have any thing to do with, elections that may be held in Egypt" in the group's first official reaction to the presidential elections next year.

On Monday, Fahmi told Anatolia news agency "We believe that any presidential, parliamentary or even local elections that Egypt's legitimate President, Mohamed Morsi, does not invite the people to conduct are constitutionally invalid, violations of the democratic rights gained by the Egyptian people in the January 2011 Revolution".

The Muslim Brotherhood spokesman stressed that "Morsi is still the legitimate President of the country. He never delegated his powers to anyone. The group did not and will not recognize any elections held without due process".

Asked whether there was a plan by the group to boycott the presidential elections, or whether certain parties asked the group to coordinate voting to support a Sisi rival, Fahmi added: "We have nothing to do with these elections".
