Pro-Legitimacy, Anti-Coup Alliance Statement on Imprisonment of President Morsi

While the whole world demands, through United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the release of President Mohamed Morsi who was illegally kidnapped since July 3 and prevented from seeing his lawyer or family, a decision is announced in a uniquely dangerous and suspicious timing to formally detain the President for 15 days on charges of spying, although he had never been accused of any such heinous crime before he was elected President, and later performed his presidential duties to the best of his ability, including foreign relations and national security affairs.

The significance of this decision – which was once before announced and then denied – is that it points to an evident collapse of the rule of law, which is clearly replaced by the law of the jungle applied by the fascist military coup henchmen.

Meanwhile, the timing points to a deliberate and malicious attempt to provoke the Egyptian public opinion in order for some to shun the peaceful nature of pro-democracy, pro-Morsi demonstrations and undermine the ‘Overturning The Coup’ million-man rallies.

We reaffirm that our ongoing, persistent and steadily escalating protest activities and events will remain peaceful, and that no-one will provoke us into violence, because we realize that our strength lies in our peacefulness, our unity, our persistence and our insistence on our rejection of the coup and on our demands for legitimacy and the completion of the democratic process to build a unified Egyptian constitutional democracy.

These repressive police practices are replicating the ‘Mubarak State’ that against which the people – from all walks of life – revolted in the great and historic January 25 Revolution. In the above-mentioned decision, the great revolution is referred to as simply a series of violent clashes and prison-breaks – a deliberate insult to the Revolution and the revolutionaries.

In fact, it is an attempt to portray the January 25 Revolution as Muslim Brotherhood / Hamas (Palestinian resistance) conspiracy, while it evidently is a great Egyptian revolution in which the Egyptian people of all denominations rose in anger and pride against injustice and tyranny.

The Egyptian people will exercise their constitutional right to peaceful protest, which they have wrested from despots with the blood of the martyrs. We will continue in our declared position of complete commitment to reinstating legitimacy, ending the coup and abolishing everything that has resulted from the illegitimate coup – all processes, actions and consequences.

This decision sends such a malignant wrong message at the wrong time that will push the masses of the Egyptian people to rally in millions and persevere in all squares across the country to carry their President on their necks back to his legitimate office.
