Rally Organized by Women Dressed in Black Lost in Women’s Quota

Eight female losing candidates in the first round of voting for the women’s quota marched up Luxor’s streets dressed in black to protest what is described by the Constitutional Liberal Party’s candidate, Rawya Al-Sahabi, and the Nasserite Party’s candidate, Hoda Abdel-Moreed, a massive fraud that was practised during the first round of the parliamentary elections held on November 28.

Protesters chanted slogans condemning voting fraud and manipulation of the elections, and carried banners reading “Egypt’s 2010 Parliamentary Elections Are Void”.

The National Council for Women drew sharp criticism from demonstrators who accused them of being biased towards the ruling NDP’s candidates, and harnessing its potential and members’ efforts to campaign for government candidates.
