Rights Groups Urge Authorities to Proceed With Elections Timetable

With the dilemma facing Egypt concerning the upcoming elections, the human rights organization, Sawaseya, called on the Egyptian authorities to proceed with the scheduled elections.

In a statement obtained by Ikhwanweb, the organization urged the authorities to respect the people’s choice illustrated during the March referendum. It stated that the ballot box was the defining point and called on the authorities to remain neutral and to continue demonstrating the wisdom for which they have come to be known.

It added that if elections are run as slated, the post-revolutionary rule of the military will end and order will be preserved in the country, paving the way for development.

It opposed circulated calls to slow down the electoral timetable and prioritize the drafting of a new constitution. Sawaseya called on all political parties, who have been trying to buy more time, to organize themselves before the elections, to think of Egypt’s wellbeing above all and to abandon these calls concerning the content of the new constitution and the process by which it will be written.
