Shaath Visits MB Cairo Headquarter, Welcomes Fatah-Hamas Mediation
Dr. Nabil Shaath, the Palestinian President’s representative in Cairo, visited the Executive Bureau of the Muslim Brotherhood where he met with Dr. Mohamed Habib, the first deputy chairman, Dr. Mahmoud Ezzat, the Secretary-General of and Executive Bureau members Dr. Mohamed Morsi, and Dr. Mahmoud Hussein, in addition to Dr. Saad Al Katatni, head of the Muslim Brotherhood parliamentary bloc. MB chairman Mohamed Mahdi Akef was not present at the meeting because of his participation in the funeral of Dr. Aziz Sedki, the former Prime Minister of Egypt.
The meeting covered the latest developments of the current crisis in the Palestinian territories and its repercussions on the Palestinian unity in particular and on the Arab region in general. “The Muslim Brotherhood called for meetings to help reaching a solution that solves these problems due to its close contacts with Hamas”, said Dr Shaath to the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, pointing out that he visited the group to get acquainted with its leaders. He said also that this is his first meeting with MB leaders since he became President Abu Mazen’s representative in Cairo .
“I have explained to the Muslim Brotherhood the current situation between Fatah and Hamas, and they [MB] showed goodwill gestures, understood the situation and expressed readiness to cooperate”, Said Shaath confirming that demanded the Egyptian moderate group to “Play a positive role and not to be bias to Hamas movement lest this add fuel to fire and that it should back legitimacy and public interest”.
Shaath revealed that Fatah Movement ” Welcomed president Mubarak’s call for dialogue”. However, he said:” Any dialogue must be based on agreements”.
Following his meeting with Shaath, Dr. Mohamed Al Sayed Habib, said in a statement to Ikhwanweb that the talks revolved around a number of points including the efforts to achieve the Palestinian national unity, working for maintaining independence of the Palestinian decision-making, a positive interaction with Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak’s call for stopping all media campaigns in order to create a positive atmosphere in a bid to reach a calming, laying down a mechanism for running crossings and proposing holding early lections under a temporary national unity government” said Habib.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Morsi revealed to Ikhwanweb that the Muslim Brotherhood welcomed Shaath”s visit to consolidate public interests and beef up the atmosphere of dialogue between Fatah and Hamas. He said also that the Muslim Brotherhood is pressing for adopting the trend of talks so that all problems are solved. Asked whether Abu Mazen”s representative called for MB mediation to sending a specific message to Hamas, Morsi said ” He demanded that Hamas becomes more positive and to hold talks in specific points approved by both parties before sitting on the table together”.
