Thousands Real Estate Taxmen Stage Set-in before Egypt ’s Cabinet Building
Thousands of Egyptian real-estate taxmen staged a sit-in in Cairo and other Egyptian governorates, and they resumed their strike on Tuesday Dec, 3rd, 2007 demanding they be paid salaries like their colleagues in the Tax Department in the Ministry of Finance.
In the Egyptian capital, some 10000 employees rallied in front of the Cabinet building lashing out at the government policies, and the Finance Ministry”s negligence to their demands. They also called for sacking Ismail Abdul Rasoul, the Tax Department chairman.
The sit-in witnessed violent clashes between the taxmen and policemen who imposed a security cordon around the building and the sit-in, assaulted the strikers, making some of them lose their consciousness due to the clashes.
Similar sit ins and strikes were held in governorates of Qina, Dakahlia, North Sinai and Ismailia on Tuesday for the same reason.
Hussein Mogawer, the chairman of the labor force union, said that maintaining the sit-in- although it is legitimate, isn”t justified, and that negotiations continue with the Minister of Finance and the crisis is about to be solved.
For his part, Ismail Abdul Rasoul, the Real Estate Tax Department chairman, said that addressing the demands raised by the workers, of moving those in directorates affiliated to the the Ministry of Finance instead of the municipalities, is up to a decision from the Minister of Finance.
It is worth mentioning that a 9-member committee representing taxmen was formed to meet the Cabinet. The security gave access to only three of them while others were denied access.
