MB Youth: We Reject Military Trials for Civilians and Suppression of Activists

 Ammar Beltagy, young Muslim Brotherhood (MB) activist expressed disappointment at the trial of Alaa Abdel Fattah and his fellow activists in military courts. Ammar said in statements to Ikhwanweb that the Egyptian people had believed that following the revolution there would be no more military tribunals for civilians. “It is totally unacceptable what we are witnessing as political activists are being referred to military trials and interrogations despite being civilians”.

Egyptian activists Alaa Abdel Fattah and Bahaa Saber who were summoned to military prosecution over allegedly inciting violence during the Maspero clashes were slammed a 15 day sentence pending investigations. It is expected that activist Mohamed Adel will also be summoned for questioning on the Maspero clashes.

Speaking to Ikhwanweb, Ammar said: “The MB members have been victims for years of the military tribunals before the revolution, therefore it understands what it’s like to be silenced, banned and have its freedom restricted. We fully reject suppressing civilians and their right to freedom of speech”.

He added, “The military’s stance towards the activists is similar to the methods practiced during the Mubarak era which continued to refer innocent civilians to military trials”.

Ammar expressed his full support and solidarity with the civilians undergoing military tribunals, hoping that the military rule will end as soon as possible.
