Speculations after Mubarak

 A recent article published in The Jewish chronicle reiterates fears that any new leader after President Mubarak would be unlikely to intensify relations with Israel as long as the Palestinian issue remains unchanged.

 
In light of the current conditions the chronicle claims that it would be risky for any new Egyptian leader to attempt to improve relations considering the evident lack of success in the Palestinian Israeli discussions despite the fact that Mubarak had preserved some sort of relation with assurances there would be no more wars.
 
Contradictory reports over Mubaraks health of late have left both Westerners and Arabs wondering what after Mubarak and whether normalization will continue or not. Mubarak has won many admirers in Israel for adhering to the 1979 Egyptian peace treaty despite numerous wars and intifadas
 
Israel’s former ambassador to Egypt Eli Shaked, described Mubarak as stable and unrevolutionary maintaining that he followed in his predecessors footsteps regarding associations with Israel .
 
An earlier interview published in Middle East Quarterly 2009, quoted the 47 year old President’s son Gamal Mubarak asserting that in the event of his assuming power Egypt would remain committed to peace with Israel indicating that rumors of Mubarak junior being groomed for presidency may be more accurate than alleged. Nevertheless both Mubaraks have denied the allegations.
 
Israeli minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer’s recent phone call with the 83 year old President however, cautioned people against expecting Mubarak’s imminent death where he believed he sounded much better than reports indicated.
 
Mubarak has been in power for over 30 years and has continued imposing the ’emergency law’ which has targeted political opposition in attempts to intimidate individuals from objecting to the regime.
The Muslim Brotherhood has faced the lion’s share of unjust and indefinite detentions practiced by the Interior ministry and security apparatus.
